Hi Caroline, it's not too sweet for my taste. I'm not a big fan of sugary desserts too! But if you're concerned, you can scale the recipe for the coconut filling down to 2/3 of the original recipe and use it just to fill the cake layers (omit the outer coating). Hope this helps!
